The Falconry Centre

Home of our amazing Birds of Prey

Our falconry centre is home to some of the fiercest and fastest predators on the planet, and to keep things balanced we also have some of the cutest owls here too!

Falconry is the ancient art of taking wild quarry with a trained bird of prey. Originally, falconry was using a bird of prey as a tool for catching food for the table, and the first records we have of this date back to 2000 BC in the Far East.

It is often called the Sport of Kings but we must remember that the Kings and gentry were the ones who wrote things down while the rest of us were busy with our lives. Our Falconry centre is located on the Hill of Carrig, and it is a fitting site as the Norman’s were renowned for their falconry skills and would often demand a conquered foe’s birds of prey as well as their sword. The earliest reference we have for falconry in Ireland is in the Irish text Betha Colman Maic Luachain (The Life of St Colman Maic Luachain) in the 7th Century, in which the King of Tara is described as having ‘da seabhac selga’, or two hunting hawks.

But Ireland became synonymous with providing the best hawks available. Raptors and goshawks became hot property, and would afford the breeder a very decent living. In fact records found in Kilkenny Castle, dating back to the 14th Century lists different types of hawks that were used for rent payment.

Our resident falconer is Jim O’Connor, he has been working with and breeding birds of prey for over thirty years. He has a wide and varied knowledge of all these birds and if you are lucky enough to meet him you will learn some amazing facts, or will he hoodwink you?
