Birds Of Prey

The Falconry Centre is home to some of the fiercest and fastest predators on the planet, as well as the cutest owls and dazzling McCaws. The earliest evidence of falconry dates back 4,000 years to Mesopotamia and Western Mongolia. While much has changed, hunting with birds of prey still depends on the bond of trust between the person and the animal. The earliest reference to falconry in Ireland relates to a 7th Century King of Tara, who is described as having ‘da seabhac selga’, or two hunting hawks. The Falconry centre is on the Hill of Carrig where the Anglo Normans possibly kept hunting birds too. There you will find Jim O’Connor whose knowledge, enthusiasm and anecdotes will make you an expert yourself before you leave!
